Hey Gs

I want to issue an invitation to you Gs out there. I know there are guys out there from every affiliation who are struggling and trying to survive in a very tough and unforgiving world. There are, however, men that can and want to help you. I belong to a Men’s Breakfast group that officially meets once a month, though the men are in constant contact through all sorts of additional activities. These are committed men who have helped any number of Gs to pull things together. I want to issue you an invitation to come join me and other guys in this group. We meet the second Saturday of every month at Daystar School (next meeting is January 12th). It’s located at 1550 South State Street in Chicago and there is plenty of parking in the rear of the building. We meet from 8 am until 10 am, though some of the men stay for other activities afterward including the Next Level group that helps guys grow personally and to find accountability with other men. We have a hearty breakfast at 8:00 am (I think the next one revolves around southern style biscuits and gravy) and then have a short study organized for the men in the group. This is a good place to meet a lot of men, some of whom, given the chance, may well be instrumental in helping YOU through your current difficulties. If you want to meet some men that will have your back, think about joining us on January 12th for our next Men’s Breakfast. If you”re interested, you can just show up, but it’s helpful to let me know so we can plan on how much food to make.

Hoping to meet some of you real soon,

Ron

Are you a woman involved in gangs, drugs, or sex trafficking and looking for help? New life for Girls may be exactly the right place for you. New Life for Girls has served women in need since 1972. With five local induction centers (including Chicago) and a Pennsylvania Training Center, this may be the place to turn to when you feel beaten, hopeless, and have no one to trust. I’m looking for some old school Latin Saints who knew Joseph Rodriguez. If you knew him and/or know about his death, could you get in touch with me. Joe was a friend and a kid I was working with back in the day. I’d just like to know more about what happened to him.

You hear the daily stores about youth and gang-related shootings in Chicago and your mind begins to dull. You watch the rising death count and  you lose hope. You experience frustration and a sense that there is nothing you can do to make a difference in a world such as this. Yet, there IS something that YOU can do. I recently attended a meeting at the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center. Young men up to 16 come through the doors of the Detention Center every day, some arriving and many departing. For those that are leaving incarceration, there is a harsh world awaiting them. Most will return to the Detention Center at east once, and most will graduate on the Cook County Jail in only a very short period of time. They swiftly move from petty infractions to major crimes that land them in jail with hardened criminals. In this way the ranks of the gangs and criminal elements are reinforced by a system overwhelmed with the mandate to teach and mentor these young men, but underwhelmed by volunteers and teachers. The Juvenile Detention Center is meant to be not so much a place of punishment as it is a place of restoration and second chances. At this point in time, these young people still have a chance to turn their lives around, to make something of themselves. Once they leave and graduate to Cook County Jail, however, that chance is usually lost forever. That’s why this is such an important time, and that’s where YOU come in. The Good News Prison and Jail Ministry that oversees ministry to these kids is in dire need of people who can serve as mentors and work to bring after-Care to the young men released from the juvenile Center. You could be one of those people, a mentor who helps the releasee to center his focus and work through the difficulties that face every young person, but which impacts those who have been detained even more. YOU can help mentor a young person and provide them with hope that they can make it, they can overcome the odds, and they can make a difference themselves. Once known to his Latin King colleagues as “Shadow,” Alex shared a story similar to many gang members in Chicago, drugs, thuggery, and incarceration. Alex was a friend of Edgar Orsini whose searching letter is prominently published under the headings of this blog. Together, they witnessed every dark place the gang lifestyle has to offer. Then, after a falling out, they split. Several years later, however, Alex committed his life to Christ and everything changed. Now he’s going back out to find those he left behind. See his story at:

Also, visit his ministry website (http://dangerouspotentialministries.wordpress.com) for more about the change that Alex has experienced in his life.

Here is information on a program that might prove helpful for those recovering from substance abuse. Located in Blue Island (IL), Guildhaus  has been working with recovering substance abusers for 25 years. The center may be worth a look so here’s the website:

Crossfire Prayer Cards

Posted: April 13, 2012 in Uncategorized

I’ve added a new element to the Crossfire website. It” called the Crossfire Prayer Card. If you go to the top index on this website, you find a number of pages where you can find information related to this site. Among them you will discover one listed as Prayer Cards.  When you open this page you will find a “weekly” Crossfire Prayer Card. Each card will provide a specific person that can be prayed for that week. I believe that prayer changes things so I would suggest that you open up the PDF and print copies of the prayer card and send them to incarcerated friends and relatives. I’m sending these cards out to guys I know so don’t be shy. I envision these cards being posted on the walls of individual cells; encouraging and guiding the prayers of inmates in a way that will not only help transform their lives, but will help to positively alter the attitude and environment in which they live. And don’t forget, you can also post them around your own homes as a reminder of what your friend or relative is praying for too! Please let me know if you have suggestions for things that can be printed on the prayer cards. Examples of the prayer cards are found below:
